PSP 1000 Full Teardown Instructions

The Sony PlayStation Portable is best known for its malleable firmware and susceptibility to modification. While modding the PSP can be fun and open up a veritable cavalcade free applications from the homebrew community, altering the software does present a few risks to the handheld's hardware. Should the system begin to malfunction, it may be beyond conventional troubleshooting and require a professional repair. If you possess degree of electronic expertise, you can attempt to disassemble the system yourself to save on the cost of a professional repair.

  • Small flat head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn the PSP over and use a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the seven screws located on the back.

      Remove the battery from its compartment and tear off the PSP warranty sticker.

      Lift the faceplate off of the PSP.

    • 4

      Pry the left-side button bar free carefully with the flat head screwdriver.

      Unplug the button bar cable.

    • 6

      Remove the tabs holding the LCD screen in place using the flat head screwdriver.

    • 7

      Remove the flex cable (it is a flat white cable) connectors attached to the LCD.

      Remove the two screws on the LCD brace using the small Phillips screwdriver.

      Pry the LCD brace free with the flat-head screwdriver.

      Remove the UMD door hatch (the plastic covering on the UMD door).

      Remove the screw over the D-pad with the small Phillips screwdriver.

      Lift the release bar underneath the D-pad and remove the flex cable.

    • 13

      Detach the flex cable from the motherboard (the largest circuit board in the center of the PSP).

      Slide the right-trigger button out.

    • 15

      Detach and remove the adhesive-coated flex cable (this flex cable is similar to every other flex cable within the PSP except that it has a mild glue holding it in place) from the PSP.

      Remove the screw holding the yellow power connector in place with the Phillips head screwdriver.

      Pull the yellow power connector out.

    • 18

      Remove the Wi-Fi antenna (it has a thin black cable attached to it).

      Remove the screw holding the motherboard in place with the small Phillips screwdriver.

    • 20

      Unplug the laser eye (it resembles a very tiny camera lens) and remove it.

      Detach the UMD motor (it is located next to the UMD door) and remove it along with its flux cable.

      Unplug and remove the speakers.

    • 23

      Remove the motherboard.

    • 24

      Remove the screw holding the daughterboard (the smaller circuit board) in place with the small phillips screwdriver to and then remove the daughterboard.

    • 25

      Pull the UMD door (the plastic tray that holds PSP games) free to complete your PSP 1000 disassembly.
