How to Replace PSP Speakers

Sony's PSP hand-held gaming device has an internal speaker system so you can listen to the audio in your games without using headphones. Unfortunately the speakers are on the small side and listening to them at too high of a volume for too long can damage them. Luckily, blown speakers don't mean the end of your PSP. If your PSP is no longer under the manufacturer's warranty you can open the device up and replace the speakers yourself. This guide is based on the PSP 2000 model, but the instructions are similar for the older PSP 1000 and newer PSP 3000.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a PSP opening tool and replacement speakers. The PSP opening tool is a nylon tool that acts as a flat-head screwdriver, allowing you to open the device and pry apart components without damaging them. Refer to the Resources section for online retailers of PSP parts.

    • 2

Lay your PSP face down on a table. Remove the battery cover and pull the battery from the bay. Remove the warning sticker in the battery bay.

    • 3

Remove the screws on the back panel of the PSP. There four screws along the back panel, including two in the battery bay. Remove the two screws on the top of the PSP along the bezel. The screws are located on the sides of the USB port. Finally, remove the single screw along the bottom bezel.

    • 4

Use your PSP opening tool to pry the front cover away from the back casing. Start on the right side of the PSP and work your way around the device. Once the front panel comes free, set it aside.

    • 5

Carefully pry up the left and right sides of the button bar, located along the bottom of the LCD screen. Once the screen comes free, lift it up and disconnect the data cable from the motherboard.

    • 6

Put on a pair of latex gloves to prevent fingerprints on your LCD screen. Carefully pry up the display screen. Start at the top of the screen and tilt it toward you. Once you have it tilted toward you, disconnect the LCD cables from the motherboard and remove the screen. Set the screen face down on the PSP's faceplate to protect it.

    • 7

Locate the speaker assembly in the upper-right corner of the motherboard. Use your PSP tool to press the release tab on the left side of the speaker. The speaker will pop free. Lift it up and disconnect the cable from the motherboard. Plug the cable for your new speaker into the motherboard and slide the speaker into its socket. Gently press down until the release tab clicks into place.

Reassemble your PSP and turn it on to test out your new speaker.
