How to Disassemble the PSP Slim

The PSP Slim, also known as the PSP 2000, is the second release of Sony's successful portable line of gaming devices. Smaller and lighter than the first generation of the device, the PSP slim is widely accepted among portable gamers. This acceptance has led to the creation of a modding community that likes to tinker with the gaming systems, replacing face plates or repairing damaged units with individual parts replacements. Any modding or repair work requires some level of PSP disassembly. You can disassemble the PSP slim with hand-held screwdrivers, quickly opening the case to access the parts that make up the system.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the PSP slim. Empty the PSP of any media and unplug the AC adapter. Remove the UMD disc from drive and memory stick from the PSP memory slot.

    • 2

Press the battery cover release button on the side of the case next to the battery compartment. Tilt the battery cover upward, toward the center of the PSP, while holding the release button; pull the cover toward the release button to open the battery case. Remove the battery.

    • 3

Place the PSP onto a flat surface with the UMD slot facing upward. Remove the small Phillips-head screws holding the PSP case together. Unscrew the four screws located on the back panel of the case, two on the corners at the right of the back panel, and two on the top and bottom of the opened battery bay. Tilt the side of the PSP nearest you slightly upward and remove the screw located in the center of the side of the machine. Tile the opposite side toward you to remove the last two screws remaining on the far side of the machine, located in the center of this side bordering the USB connector. If these last two screws are not Phillips-head, you will need a triple square screwdriver instead. Purchase triple square screwdriver sets from electronics or computer shops.

    • 4

Lift the face plate from the front of the PSP.

    • 5

Pry the button bar at the bottom of the screen up gently. Remove the clips holding the screen in place and then tilt the screen forward to access the interior of the machine.

    • 6

Unclip the small ribbon cable connecting the button bar to the PSP motherboard; remove the button bar from the machine.

    • 7

Disconnect the screen cables from the motherboard and lift the screen from the PSP Slim.
