How to Do a Software Update on a PSP Without a Memory Stick

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is similar to a computer in that its operating system can be updated on a regular basis. If you don't have a memory stick, you can do a software update on the PSP by using a licensed PSP game disc. Sony has authorized third-party game developers to put the most recent software update that is available for the PSP onto their game discs. Accessing the software update only requires pressing a few buttons that normally would not be touched.

  Hold the PSP with the LCD screen facing you. Slide the release latch at the upper-right corner of the PSP to the right. Pull the now-released disc door out from the back of the PSP. Insert a PSP game disc into the slot inside of the disc compartment with the label facing away from you. Close the disc door.

  Place the PSP down on a table with the disc door at the top facing away from you. Press the power button on the lower-right edge of the PSP up for a second. Wait for the "Home" menu to appear on the LCD screen.

  Navigate to the "Game" icon. Select the icon of the PSP game disc that is beneath "Game." Select the "PSP Update" icon that is to the right of the icon of the PSP game disc. Press the "X" button to begin the software update.

  Follow the onscreen directions to install the software update on the PSP. Press the "Continue" button on the screen when it appears inside of the "Software update finished" confirmation. Navigate back to the "Home" menu. Push up on the power button on the lower-right edge of the PSP for a second to turn the PSP off.

  Hold the PSP with the LCD screen facing you. Slide the release latch at the upper-right corner of the PSP to the right. Pull the now-released disc door out from the back of the PSP. Remove the PSP game disc from the slot inside of the disc compartment. Close the disc door.
