How to Troubleshoot a PSP UMD

The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) uses a disc format known as UMD (Universal Media Disc). UMD games, music and movies are all compatible with your Sony PSP. If your PSP has trouble reading UMDs or you have issues with a particular disc, troubleshooting may be in order. Troubleshooting a PSP UMD eliminates the possible causes of any issues you&'re having with a specific UMD, or your PSP console and may solve the problem without a phone call or email to Sony support.

Instructions

  1. Reinsert and Inspect the UMD

    • 1

Open the Sony PSP UMD drive.

    • 2

Inspect the PSP UMD drive and UMD disc for any damage, moisture and obstructions. Do not use a cracked, broken, damp or dirty UMD on your PSP console. A wet or damp UMD must dry completely before it can be safely used.

    • 4

Slide the UMD into the UMD drive with the label facing the back of the PSP console and the rounded edge pointing downward.

    • 5

Close the UMD drive and power on the PSP to see if it works.

    • 6

Power on your PSP and scroll to "Settings" on the home menu.

    • 7

      Choose "System Settings."

    • 8

Select the "Restore Default Settings" option.

    • 9

Choose "Yes" and confirm you want to restore the system to the default settings. This may take several minutes.
