Things You'll Need
Instructions
Insert a Memory Stick Duo into your PSP. Ensure that the memory card contains the data you wish to transfer from your PSP to an external hard drive by selecting either "Video," "Music" or "Game" from the PSP's main menu screen and highlighting the "Memory Stick" option beneath any one of these. You will see a display of files of each type, which are stored to your Memory Stick Duo.
Connect your PSP to your personal computer using the PSP to PC USB cable. Select "USB Connection" from the "Settings" option on the PSP's main menu screen, then press the "X" button. You will see a confirmation screen on your PSP letting you know that your console is in communication with your computer. Navigate to your computer's main drive, which will now recognize the PSP's memory as removable media.
Create a folder on your personal computer in which to back up files from your PSP's memory. The desktop is a convenient, accessible location for this folder. Name the folder something functional and easy to remember, such as "PSP Backup" or "PSP Hard Drive".
Open the PSP's removable media directory on your computer's main drive. Within this directory, you will see folders labeled according to their content (e.g., VIDEO contains stored video files, MUSIC holds saved audio files). Locate the audio, video, or game files you wish to back up, then copy and paste them into the folder you created on your PC's desktop. Depending on the size of the files, this process may take several minutes.
Copy and paste the folder containing your backup PSP files to a device of your choice, such as a USB flash drive, SD memory card or traditional PC external hard drive. You can also simply let them remain on your computer, which can act as an external hard drive. Now that you've backed up your PSP files to your custom external hard drive, you can free up space on your PSP's memory without data loss. To transfer files back to your PSP, simply copy and paste them from your backup folder into the PSP's directory.
