How to Save PSP Games as CSO Files

The Playstation Portable (PSP) was developed by Sony and released in North America in 2005. The PSP uses a Universal Media Disc (UMD) to read games and movies. You can rip the ISO file from the UMD to create a back-up in case your UMD gets lost or damaged. Depending on the size of your memory stick, you could add several games to your PSP so you won't have to carry your UMDs with you. You even can compress your ISOs into CSOs to reduce the file size.

Things You'll Need

  • Playstation Portable UMD
  • USB cord
  • 2 gigabyte or greater memory stick

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your Playstation Portable into your computer using a USB cord. Plug the smaller end of the USB cord into the top of the PSP and plug the bigger end of the USB cord into your computer. Turn on your PSP and scroll over to settings and up to USB connections. Download USB Special System Storage (USBSSS) from a website and extract it to your desktop (see Resources). There should be two folders named "_SCE_USBSSS" and "%_SCE_USBSSS". Drag them into your "PSP/Game150" folder.

Disconnect your PSP's USB connection by hitting "Circle" on your PSP. Make sure you keep the USB cord plugged into both the computer and the PSP. Insert any Playstation Portable UMD you want to make a back-up of into your PSP. On your PSP scroll over to "Games" and then select "Memory Stick." Run the USBSSS program.

Once USBSSS loads, select the top option, which is your UMD. When you click it, it will open up on your computer. Drag that ISO file onto your desktop. This may take up to 40 minutes depending on the size of the game and the speed of your computer.

Download UMDGen from the internet to your desktop and then unzip (see Resources). Double click the UMDGen icon and drag the ISO file from your desktop to the UMDGen window. Click save at the top and choose compress (.cso). For the file name, just use the name of the game and click save to continue. This may take several minutes.

Activate your PSP's USB connection and drag the compressed CSO file into the ISO folder in your PSP. After it's done copying, disconnect your PSP's USB connection and restart your PSP. Once it has turned back on, scroll to "Games" and down to "Memory Stick" to find your CSO file.
