How to Get on the Internet on a PSP Without WiFi

Since the device's introduction in 2004, the Sony PSP has been capable of Internet connection for functions such as browsing and PlayStation Network Access, along with later added functionality in the form of Internet radio and Skype access. However, anyone wishing to use a PSP for Internet access was limited to Wi-Fi connections through public hot-spots and home networks, as the handheld system offered no other options for connection. In 2009, Sony changed the options for connecting a PlayStation Portable with the release of the PSPgo model. Pairing the 6.10 firmware update with the system's built-in Bluetooth capability made the PSPgo Internet-accessible through tethering with an Internet-ready Bluetooth device such as a cellphone. Anyone with a PSPgo and a Bluetooth-enabled phone now has the ability to browse, play games, and download content on their Sony handheld anywhere they have cellphone service.

How to Tether a PSPgo to a Cell Phone for Internet Access

  Turn on both the PSPgo and the cell phone.

  Navigate to the PSP's "Settings" menu and select "Bluetooth Management Devices" followed by "Register a New Device." Ensure your cell phone is in Bluetooth connection mode, and the PSPgo will locate and connect to it. If you are required to enter a Bluetooth access code for your device, the code should be located in the phone's user manual.

  Place the PSPgo into "Infrastructure Mode" by selecting the option from the "Network Settings" submenu in "Settings" section on the PSP's menu.

  Choose "New Connection," followed by "Bluetooth Modem." Ensure that you select the cell phone you tethered to the PSP in Step 2. The PSPgo will prompt you through establishing the Internet connection. Now, whenever you choose any options that require Internet access, selecting the connection you established with your cell phone from the available options will allow you access without a Wi-Fi connection.
