How to Put CODECs on a PSP to Play Videos

Codecs are small programs that allow for the encoding of media files. The PSP originally only came with an MP4 codec to play videos and MP3 codec for audio files. Sony has steadily included more and more codecs for the PSP in their PSP firmware updates. In order to install the latest codecs, you need simply update your PSP firmware, which is, of course, free.

Instructions

      Turn on your Sony PSP and select "System Update" from the PSP main menu. This will bring into the system update wizard.

      Select "Update Via Internet" and select your internet connection that will download the new system firmware.

      Select "Download Update Data" and wait as the update file is downloaded. Press the "X" button to begin the update.

    • 4

      Wait as the firmware is updated. Press the "X" button once again to reboot the PSP. You will now have the latest codecs on your PSP.
