Screen
The screen is the biggest and most important change in the PSP 3000 model. At first glance, the screen appears the same as with the 2000, but the 3000 screen produces a much clearer and crisper image while using a little less power. In fact, Sony estimates the new screen gives players an additional 20 minutes.
Microphone
Sony PSP 2000 owners who wanted to use Skype for Internet phone calls would have to purchase a compatible microphone headset. The 3000 model has a built-in microphone, installed beneath the main screen next to the PSP logo. There are few games that require microphones for gameplay, meaning the microphone was primarily installed for Skype calling.
Physical Changes
The 3000 unit is now matte finished, instead of plastic with a higher gloss. The buttons beneath the home menu are no longer semi-circular, but more ovoid. The control buttons are slightly ergonomic on the 3000. Finally, the silver ring on the back of the PSP is the same diameter on both units, but the PSP 2000's ring is about twice as wide.
Unchanged Elements
The battery compartment is almost completely unchanged, so the PSP 2000 battery is also compatible with the PSP 3000. The MemoryStik Duo compartment is also the same. All of the buttons are in the same place, and look almost identical, aside from those already mentioned. The headphone/headset jack is in the same place.
Compatibility
Because the units look almost identical, most of the cases and bumpers compatible with the PSP 2000 will fit on the PSP 3000. You can still use a PSP-compatible headset for your Skype calling, if you choose. You can also use the same MemoryStik Duo.
