How to Fix a PSP That Won't Turn on

If your PSP loses power during a system update, the device will become unresponsive and will not be able to be turned back on. You will not be able to play anything on it. When the PSP cannot be turned on, it is called a brick. Fixing a bricked PSP can only be done by using a service tool (Pandora) battery and magic memory stick. The battery places the PSP into a low memory service state, which allows the memory stick to reinstall the system software, also called the PSP firmware.

Remove the battery and memory stick from the PSP. The battery compartment is located on the rear, while the card reader is on the left side of the device.

Insert the magic memory stick into the PSP card reader. This has the firmware on it that will be reflashed to the device.

    • 3

Insert the Pandora battery into the PSP battery compartment and the PSP will turn on automatically. The PSP is now in service mode.

Press the "X" button two times to reflash the firmware to the PSP. Press the "X" button one more time to power down the PSP when the installation completes and the screen reads "100%."
