My PSP Won't Read Any Memory Sticks, What Is Wrong?

Lacking a built-in hard drive, the Sony PSP has a memory card slot that accepts memory cards for storage. But dirt and debris can get onto the memory card slot's connectors, making it impossible for the PSP to read or write data. Repair the damage by cleaning the connectors on the memory card slot using a few household items. The procedure is straightforward, does not violate the PSP's warranty (because the case will not have to be opened) and doesn't require any electrical skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the PSP by its right side using your right hand. Open the memory card slot door on the lower left-side edge of the PSP.

    • 2

Raise the right side of the PSP vertically so the memory card slot is facing down. Gently shake the PSP to dislodge any loose dirt or debris from inside of the memory card slot.

    • 3

Hold the compressed air in your left hand. Aim the nozzle of the compressed air at the memory card slot from a few inches away. Blow out the memory card slot with the compressed air.

    • 4

Put a soft cloth on a table. Lay the PSP on the soft cloth with the LCD screen facing up and the disc drive door facing away from you.

    • 5

Moisten an end of a lint-free cloth in distilled alcohol.

    • 6

Wipe the moistened end of the lint free cloth around the edge of the memory slot door that is at the lower left corner edge of the PSP.

    • 7

Wipe the moistened end of the lint free cloth around the inside of the memory slot door. Let the memory slot door dry off for five minutes.

    • 8

Place a PSP memory card on the soft cloth with the exposed contacts facing up.

    • 9

Moisten a cotton swab in distilled alcohol. Wipe the exposed contacts of the PSP memory card with the moistened end of the cotton swab.

    • 10

Insert the PSP memory card into the memory card slot in the normal way. Push and pull the PSP memory card inside of the memory card slot to engage and disengage the exposed contacts in the memory card slot's connectors.

    • 11

Remove the PSP memory card. Let the memory card slot connectors dry for five minutes.

    • 12

Repeat the procedure of holding the PSP with the memory card slot facing down and blowing into it with compressed air.

    • 13

Place the PSP back on the soft cloth with the LCD screen facing up and the disc drive door facing away from you.

    • 14

Insert a PSP memory card into the memory card slot. Close the memory card slot door.
