How to Open Your PSP Parts Safely

The Sony PSP hand-held video game console plays games, music and even movies. As such, the system has a number of parts that can be opened or removed and that may be damaged in the process. Knowing how to safely open the various parts of your PSP is essential to enjoying the system without premature failure of the unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Carefully open the disc drive when loading UMD (universal media disc) games or movies. Gently press the drive until it pops open, taking care not to use too much force. On older units with a spring-release drive, use the catch button above the disc drive to open the drive. Do not touch the "pickup" or the lens inside the drive because this could damage the PSP's ability to read media discs.

    • 2

Disconnect the power adapter before attempting to access or change the battery of the PSP game console. This will eliminate the risk of getting a jolt of electricity while the rear portion of the PSP is open and will allow you to safely remove and change the battery.

    • 3

When opening the rear panel of your PSP to access the battery, press the small crescent-shaped button on the left side of the back of your PSP. Do not attempt to force open the unit--the button will release the catch and allow you to remove the back panel smoothly and without damage to the PSP. If you are using a PSP Go slide-screen unit, carefully remove the four screws and lift the rear housing from the unit before removing the battery.

    • 4

Carefully lift the lowest end of the Memory Stick Duo protective cover when changing memory. This is a particularly delicate spot on the PSP, and the protective cover can break off easily if you try to pry it open or use too much force. Do not touch the gold connector prongs of the Memory Stick Duo card when you remove or insert it, as this can damage the stick.

    • 5

If you use a protective case for your PSP, open the case and remove the PSP before plugging in the power adapter or playing the game system. According to Sony, there is a risk of your system overheating if you charge it or play it while it is in the case.
