How to Connect PSP to PS3 Through Remote Play on a Different Network

Remote Play allows users to connect their Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable) to their PlayStation 3 (PS3) wirelessly to access their PS3's content wherever there's a wireless Internet connection---even if the PSP and PS3 are linked through different networks. The initial Remote Play setup is the key in enabling this feature. After that, it's just a matter of making a handful of menu selections on your PSP.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your Sony PSP to the PlayStation 3 using the USB cable included with the PSP. It plugs directly into any of the PS3's USB ports on the front of the console. The cable used to recharge your SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 controllers also works.

    • 2

Enable USB mode on your PSP. Do this by powering on the console, going to the "Settings" tab on the home menu, and choosing the "USB Connection" option. Press the "X" button to enter USB mode.

    • 3

Power on your PlayStation 3, scroll to the "Settings" icon on the home menu, and scroll down to "Remote Play Settings." Press the "X" button on the PS3 controller to enter the "Remote Play Settings" menu.

    • 4

Highlight "Register Device" and press "X." Press "X" again to select "OK." This registers your PSP with your PlayStation 3.

    • 5

Scroll down to "Remote Start" and press the "X" button. Highlight the option to enable "Remote Start" via the Internet and press "X." Then press down and select "OK" to save the changes. "Remote Start" allows you to power on your PlayStation 3 using your PSP from wherever you are using any Internet connection. If you don't want this feature enabled, you can skip this step. However, this means your PS3 needs to be on if you want to use Remote Play.

    • 6

Sign into the PlayStation Network on your PlayStation 3. Scroll to the "Network" icon on the home menu and choose to sign in if you haven't already.

    • 7

Scroll to the Network icon on the PlayStation 3's home menu, highlight "Remote Play," and press the "X" button. A screen will appear showing the PS3 is ready for a Remote Play connection.

    • 8

Disconnect your PSP by pressing the "Circle" button to get out of USB mode. It's now safe to remove the USB cable from the console.

    • 9

Make sure your PSP is within range of a wireless Internet access point. Then scroll to the Network icon on the PSP home menu and choose "Remote Play."

    • 10

Choose to Connect via the Internet.

    • 11

Select the wireless access point from the list provided and sign into the PlayStation Network. Make sure you use the same PlayStation Network account as you used on your PlayStation 3. You are now connected to your PlayStation 3 using Remote Play.
