How to Fix a Wet PSP

The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) was released to much fanfare in March of 2005. It was the first true next-generation portable gaming system, supporting 3-D gaming and using a proprietary disc format (UMD) to run games and movies. As with any electronic device, getting a PSP wet can permanently damage the device.

Instructions

    • 1

Immediately turn off the device, and open all openings. Eject the UMD and remove it. Open the battery door and remove the battery. Remove any memory card in the device.

    • 2

Vacuum the device with a vacuum capable of picking up water. This will prevent the water you are removing from seeping further into the device (as a blow dryer may).

    • 3

Bury the PSP in a bowl or bag of rice. Rice absorbs water and will pull moisture form the air around it. This may be able to pull some of the water deep within the PSP out.

    • 4

Wait at least 24 hours, then attempt to turn the power on again. If this does not work, continue to Step 5.

    • 5

Open the PSP. Do this carefully, as mishandling the system could easily cause further damage. Inspect the PSP for obvious internal damage, and clean any residue left by the water damage.

    • 6

Send the device to Sony if nothing else works. They will charge money to fix it. Depending on the damage done, it may not be fixable.
