How to Play Downloaded UMD Movies on the PSP

The Sony PlayStation Portable uses a Universal Media Disc for games and movies. These discs can be ripped just like DVDs. When they are downloaded from the PSP to the computer, they come in ISO format. This format easily can be played in any PSP that is running custom firmware. Firmware is the software that runs the PSP, and if it is custom, it means that it is created by independent developers and not Sony. Making these ISO copies of your UMD movies will allow you to bring more movies with you, all on one memory stick.

Things You'll Need

  • USB cable
  • UMD ISO file
  • Pandora battery
  • Magic memory stick

Instructions

  1. Installing the ISO (Already running custom firmware)

    • 1

Turn on your Sony PSP and connect it to your computer. A window will appear, giving you access to your PSP memory stick.

    • 2

Open the folder that is named "ISO" and you will see another folder inside called "VIDEO." If you do not have this folder, create it by right-clicking inside of the "ISO" folder and clicking "New" followed by "folder." Name it "VIDEO."

    • 3

Copy and paste your ISO file(s) into the VIDEO folder and wait as they transfer to the PSP memory stick.

    • 4

Press the "Circle" button to disconnect your PSP safely from the computer. Navigate through your PSP menu until you reach the video section. Your movie will be waiting for you there. Select it to play.

Installing Custom Firmware (Not running custom firmware)

    • 5

Slide the power button up on the PSP to turn it off and wait for it to power down completely. Remove the battery by pushing the battery button inward while sliding the cover out and off. Open the memory stick slot door and push the memory stick inward to pop it out.

    • 6

Insert your Magic memory stick into the PSP. This has the custom firmware on it that will be installed. Insert your Pandora battery, and the PSP will turn on all by itself. You will see a black screen with white text on it.

    • 7

Press the "X" button on the PSP control pad to enter into the custom firmware installation process. On the next page read the warnings and user agreement. The warnings include voiding your warranty and corrupting your PSP. This is called a "brick" and is rare. If this occurs, all you need to do to remedy it is to go through this guide once more, starting from scratch. The user agreement states that you do not sell the firmware and name it as your own. Press "X" to agree and install the custom firmware.

    • 8

Wait as the PSP is updated and press "X" when the program tells you to. This will shut down the PSP. Remove the battery and memory stick when the PSP is off. Reinsert the normal battery and memory stick. You now can use your PSP as you normally would, but you will be running custom firmware.
