How to Copy UMD Videos to PSP

The PSP is a portable video game device made by Sony. The PSP uses the UMD (universal media disk) as its disk medium. At first Sony only offered games on the UMD, but soon after began releasing movies on them as well. You need to be running custom firmware on your PSP in order to copy the UMD's ISO file and play the resulting file. Custom firmware (CFW) is the software that runs the PSP (see Resources), but it was not created by Sony. It has encountered controversy, but it is legal. Installing the firmware will, however, void your warranty.

Instructions

  1. Copying the UMD

    • 1

Turn on your Sony PSP and wait for it to boot into the PSP menu. Insert your UMD movie into the PSP disk drive and close the drive door.

    • 2

Press the "Select" button on your Sony PSP and the VSH menu will appear. Locate the "USB Device" and change it from "Memory stick" to "UMD" by pressing the "X" button.

    • 3

Connect your PSP to the computer with a USB cable and a window will appear. You will now have access to your PSP UMD movie. Simply right-click the ISO file, click "Copy" and "Paste" it to somewhere on your computer. Press the "O" button after the copying process is complete to disconnect the PSP.

    • 4

Go back into the VSH menu and change the "USB Device" back to "Memory stick." Connect your PSP to the computer again and a window will once again appear, only this time it will show your memory stick files.

    • 5

Open the "ISO" folder and place your ISO video into the "VIDEO" folder that you find inside. Wait as the file transfers and press the "O" button to disconnect the PSP when complete.

Installing Custom Firm Ware If You Haven't Done So

    • 6

Turn off your Sony PSP and remove the memory stick and the battery from the device. You will be replacing them with a Magic memory stick and the special service tool battery known as the Pandora battery.

    • 7

Insert the Magic memory stick into the PSP first. Immediately afterward, insert the Pandora battery into the PSP battery cradle. Your PSP will power on all by itself.

    • 8

Read the text that is presented to you and press "X" to install custom firmware onto your Sony PSP. Agree to the terms and warnings by pressing the "X" button once again and wait as the new firmware is installed.

    • 9

Press "X" to power down your Sony PSP. Replace the Magic memory stick and battery with the normal ones and turn the PSP on. The PSP menu will look identical to the normal Sony firmware menu.
