How to Remove a PSP UMD Door

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) plays universal media disc (UMD) games inserted into a disc drive at the upper middle edge of the device. The spring-powered hinge of the UMD door can become defective and refuse to shut completely, making it unable to play games. You can remove the UMD door to repair or replace the hinge.

Things You'll Need

  • Towel
  • Phillips jeweler's screwdriver
  • Flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver
  • Tweezers

Instructions

    • 1

      Place a towel down on a table. Place the PSP face down on the towel. Insert the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver into the seam between the battery lid and the battery compartment.

      Wiggle the tip of the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver to loosen the battery lid. Lift the battery lid off with your fingers. Place the battery lid aside.

      Insert the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver beneath the battery in the battery compartment. Wiggle the tip of the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver to loosen the battery. Remove the battery with your fingers and place it aside.

      Scratch off the sticker inside of the battery compartment using the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

      Remove the screw from under the sticker and from inside of the battery compartment using the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

      Remove the two screws from the upper middle surrounding the UMD door, the two screws from the right side and the screw at the bottom middle of the PSP using the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

      Turn the PSP face up on the towel. Lift the top plate off of the PSP̵7;s bottom plate using your fingers. Place the top plate aside.

      Run the tip of the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver around the LCD panel to loosen the clips holding the panel down. Push up on a corner of the LCD panel with the tip of the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver to loosen it. Lift the LCD panel up off the bottom plate using your fingers.

      Remove the small copper colored plug from the connector on the left side of the bottom plate with the tweezers.

      Remove the screws from around the metal bracket lying lengthwise against the top of the LCD panel using the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver. Lift the metal bracket off of the bottom plate with your fingers and place it aside.

      Run the tip of the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver around the LCD panel to loosen the clips holding the panel down. Push up on a corner of the LCD panel with the tip of the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver to loosen it. Lift the LCD panel up off the bottom plate using your fingers.

      Pull out the copper colored plug from the connector inside of the bottom plate̵7;s top edge with the your fingers. Release the small connector to the left of the copper colored connector using the tweezers. Pull the cable out of the small connector with the tweezers. Remove the LCD panel and place it aside.

      Remove the screws surrounding the large metal bracket inside of the bottom plate using the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver. Lift the large metal bracket up and off of the bottom plate with your fingers. Place the large metal bracket aside.

      Pull out the black cable at the top edge of the bottom plate next to the connector butting up against the plastic insert with the tweezers.

      Remove the screw to the right of the connector with the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver. Lift the plastic insert up and off of the bottom plate. Place the plastic insert aside.

      Remove the plastic gear to the left of the serial sticker with your fingers and place it aside.

      Remove the two screws at the top edge of the bottom plate on the left and right sides of the UMD door with the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver. Lift the bottom plate up with your hand.

      Pull the UMD door off of the bottom plate. Place the bottom plate back down on the towel. Place the UMD door down on the towel.
