How to Get a PSP to Connect to an Ad Hoc Network

Similar to the Nintendo DS, Sony's PlayStation Portable is capable of connecting to other consoles for wireless play. Some games for the PSP support ad hoc play, a means of linking multiple PSP consoles together for multiplayer gameplay. While ad hoc play is supported only by specific titles, setting up your PSP so it connects to an ad hoc network is always the same. An Internet connection is not used when playing on an ad hoc network.

Instructions

    • 1

      Power on your PSP.

    • 2

Turn on the WLAN switch on the side of your PSP.

    • 3

Set your PSP's channel so it matches the channel of the consoles you are connecting to. Scroll to "Settings" on the PSP home menu (called the "cross media bar," or "XMB"), select "Network Settings," then choose "Ad Hoc Mode" to adjust the ad hoc channel settings. To connect to the same ad hoc network, all PSP consoles connecting to the ad hoc network need to be set to "Automatic" or the same channel number.

    • 4

Insert an ad hoc-compatible game into your PSP and begin the game.

    • 5

Select the multiplayer mode for the game you're playing. Your PSP will recognize all other consoles playing the same game.
