How to Make an Analog Controller for a PSP

The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) can provide countless hours of play, but the analog control nub on the PSP is difficult to use, not very responsive and starts to hurt the thumb after a while. Replacing it with an analog controller from a game console will not only be more comfortable, but give you better control over the games you play. You will not have to open up the PSP to make the analog controller work with it, but the warranty will be voided if you take it into a service center with the analog controller you have made attached to it.

Instructions

    • 1

Put some newspaper down on a table. Put the PS2 controller face down on the newspaper. Remove the screws from the back using the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver. Insert the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver into the seam between the front and back shells of the PS2 controller. Wiggle the two loose. Pull the back shell off of the front shell.

    • 2

Gently lift off the analog pad from on top of the analog control-stick hub. Place the analog pad down on the newspaper. Discard the PS2 controller.

    • 3

Use the utility knife to remove the padded material that surrounds the analog pad. Apply the rough-finish nail polish to the flat smooth side of the analog pad. Let the nail polish dry.

    • 4

Gently pull up on the analog stick of the PSP to remove it--wiggle the blade of the flat-edged screwdriver under one side of the analog stick once it has been raised a bit off the PSP to help it along.

    • 5

Insert the analog pad with the flat and now rough side up into the hole that is now vacant on the PSP. You now have a large and easy-to-operate analog controller on the PSP.
