How to Open a Fat PSP Battery

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) can be modified so that its operating system will recognize and play programs created by PSP owners. Owners of the first-generation PSP can use the battery that came with the portable (referred to as ̶0;Fat̶1; or ̶0;Phat̶1;) to modify the operating system. The PSP battery will have to be opened so that the electronics inside of it can be accessed and modified. Opening the battery is not complicated, but does require patience and attention to detail so that no damage is done to the electronics inside.

Instructions

    • 1

Put a soft cloth down on a table. Put the PSP face down on the soft cloth. Remove the battery compartment on the left back side. Put the battery compartment aside.

    • 2

Insert the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver beneath the battery. Wiggle the tip to loosen the battery.

    • 3

Use your fingers to pull the battery out of the battery compartment. Put the battery down on the newspaper with the warning label facing up.

    • 4

Place your left hand on the top of the battery to hold it down and pick up the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver with your right hand (reverse this for ̶0;lefties̶1;).

    • 5

Insert the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver into the seam between the top and bottom parts of the battery. Continue inserting the tip between the seam until you hear a soft ̶0;popping̶1; sound.

    • 6

Move the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver around the seam until you have circled the battery and are back where you started.

    • 7

Lift the top part of the battery up off of the bottom part. Put the top part of the battery down on the newspaper.
