How to Make a Two-Analog Stick PSP Controller

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) only includes one analog stick. Converting the joystick controller into another analog stick will improve the speed at which games can be played so that you will be able to gain higher scores. You will have to make the adjustments to the circuit board of the PSP yourself, since no service center offers this as a service. Do not add a second analog stick if you are uncomfortable with using tools to open up and modify the PSP.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the towel down on a table. Put the PSP face down on the towel. Insert the flat-edged screwdriver into the seam between the battery compartment and the back of the PSP. Wiggle the battery compartment loose. Insert the flat-edged screwdriver under the battery and wiggle it loose. Place the battery aside. Open the SD memory card compartment, remove the SD card and place it aside. Close the SD memory card compartment. Eject the disc drive door and remove any disc that might be inside. Close the disc drive door.

Use the flat-edged screwdriver to scratch off the stickers inside the battery compartment. Use the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver to remove the two screws that are now revealed. Use the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver to remove the two screws surrounding the disc drive door. Use the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver to remove the screw from the corner of the right side of the PSP. Use the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver to remove the two screws from the left side of the PSP.

    • 3

Turn the PSP back right side up. Pull the faceplate off the bottom of the PSP using your fingers. Put both shells down on the towel with the electronics of the bottom plate facing up and the wiring attached to the faceplate facing up.

    • 4

Put the PS2 controller face down on the towel. Remove the screws from around the back using the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver. Push the plastic tab in the middle in, using the tip of the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver. Insert the edge of the flat-edged jeweler̵7;s screwdriver between the front and back shells of the PS2 controller to loosen them from each other. Use your fingers to pull the two shells apart.

Cut five 6-inch pieces of electrical wire with the wire cutters. Strip a 1/2-inch of insulation off of each end of the wires using the wire strippers.

    • 6

Locate the small circuit board directly underneath one of the two analog controller pads that has two little green boxes on them. Use the desoldering iron on all of the pins surrounding the circuit board to loosen it from the body of the PS2 controller. Insert the flat-edged screwdriver between the circuit board and the body of the PS2 controller to loosen it. Use the needle-nosed pliers to pull the circuit board up and off of the body of the PS2 controller. Remove the analog stick nub from the PS2 controller's shell. Discard the PS2 controller.

    • 7

Locate the small metal plate at the corner of the PSP's faceplate. Solder the end of one wire each to the contacts at the side of the small metal plate. Let the solder cool. Use the utility knife to make a small notch in the upper corner of the faceplate across from where the small metal plate is located. Run the four wires through the small notch. Reverse the steps to reassemble the PSP.

    • 8

Position the circuit board so that one of the green boxes is at the bottom and the other green box is at the right side. Solder one end of the as-yet-unused wire to the leftmost bottom contact on the green box. Solder the other end of the wire to the uppermost right contact of the other green box.

    • 9

Solder the free end of one of the wires connected to the PSP to the leftmost bottom contact on the green box. Solder the free end of another wire to the contact next to the leftmost bottom contact on the green box. Solder the free end of another wire to the rightmost bottom contact on the green box. Solder the free end of the last wire to the center contact of the other green box. Let the solder cool.

    • 10

Turn the circuit board over. Put the analog nub onto the end of hub on the circuit board.

    • 11

Reinsert the battery and SD card into their respective compartments of the PSP. Turn on the PSP and enjoy using the second analog stick you have made.
