How to Put a New Card Reader in a PSP

The Sony PlayStation Portable makes use of a Memory Stick Duo to save game data and store music and movies. The memory stick reader is located on the left side of the PSP, underneath the analog joy stick. If you memory card reader is having trouble reading your memory sticks, you can replace it with a new one.

      Take off the PSP faceplate. There are five screws on the back of the PSP that need to be removed. Two black screws are on the right side. Another two black screws are located in the battery bay, with one of those underneath the warranty sticker. The final one is a silver screw located on the bottom of the PSP, next to the bar code. With those screws removed, the lid will pop off.

      Remove the LCD screen. Pop off the button bar on the bottom of the LCD screen. With that removed, the LCD screen will slide out.

      Remove the LCD brace by unscrewing the seven silver screws on the front side and two silver screws from the battery bay.

      Remove the directional pad by unscrewing the silver screw and prying it off, disconnecting the cable as you take it off.

      Disconnect the power supply, UMD reader and Wi-Fi antennae.

      Take out the motherboard. The memory card reader is located underneath the metal housing, under the motherboard.

      Unscrew the metal housing and remove it.

      Disconnect and lift out the memory card reader and replace it with a new one. Follow these steps in reverse to reassemble your PSP.
