What Is UMD for the PSP?

Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) has the ability to play games and movies formatted to Universal Media Discs. This format was designed specifically for the PSP as a means of protecting against copyright piracy.

Universal Media Disc
- Universal Media Discs, or UMDs, can fit 1.8GB on a dual-layer disc and 900 MB on a single-layer disc. UMDs are not offered for personal recordings.
Encryption
- UMDs were designed with a disc-specific 128-bit encryption and a PSP ID, or a personal identification number that prevents them from being hacked. This is an ideal format for developers since it prevents piracy, or illegal recording and distribution.
Disc Design
- A UMD is 4.06400mm thick, 2-1/2 inches in diameter and weighs .35 ounces.
Video Games
- You can purchase UMDs as playable video games for the PSP and choose from a vast selection rated E to M, including "Twisted Metal: World Tour," "God of War: Chains of Olympus" and "Need for Speed Underground."
Movies
- You can purchase UMDs as watchable movies, choosing from an extensive selection rated G to NC-17, including "Spider-Man," "The Incredibles" and "Sin City."
