How to Put GPS on PSP

Sony continues to improve upon their portable gaming device by adding non-gaming upgrades. No longer simply a game system for kids, the PSP is capable of GPS tracking. You will need to purchase the official PSP-290 GPS receiver and download the appropriate software to use utilize the GPS capabilities. Before you think about using this cool new feature, you will need to set up your PSP with custom firmware, a process that can be confusing and will require some patience.

  Set up your PSP to run homebrew firmware. This usually requires a Pandora Battery and customized memory stick which are then used to install the firmware. Follow the eHow guide listed in the resources section for specifics on getting your PSP ready.

  By a Sony PSP-290 GPS adapter. These were originally only sold in Japan, but you can find them online through auction sites and other third-party websites.

  Download the MapThis software and install it to your homebrew PSP. This program uses Google Maps technology and is capable of tracking your speed and coordinates. Depending on the version of custom firmware, you will need to move around a few files to get the program running correctly (directions can be found on the download page).

  Download the gmdl tool from this website: http://www.in7ane.com/psp/. Click on the file labeled " gmdl0.5.13a.zip." This is a Google Maps downloader that is needed to get local maps to use with the GPS software. Unzip the files and navigate to the "GMDL/bin/Debug" folder and run the file "Global Map Download Tool." This program will help you specify the location and type of map you'd like to use for you GPS system.

  Once the gmdl tool has downloaded the specified map, you can find it under the same "GMDL/bin/Debug" folder mentioned above. Copy this file to your PSP MapThis program under the "Maps" folder.

  Connect the GPS adapter to the top of the PSP. You will need to screw it in to the two holes on the narrow top side just above the screen.

  Run the MapThis program and you should be able to use the downloaded Google maps on your new PSP GPS system.
