How to Play MP4 Files on PSP

TThe Sony PSP was released in North America on March 24, 2005. It has become a very popular handheld gaming system, due largely in part to its flexibility in terms of the media that it can play. Users can play games, listen to music, view pictures and watch movies on the PSP. However, due to a lack of internal storage, before any media can be enjoyed on the PSP, it must first be put onto a Memory Stick Pro Duo memory card. The PSP supports only a specific MP4 video format.

Instructions

  1. Converting the MP4 File to the Right Format

    • 1

Download and install video conversion software. There are many free options available to accomplish this task. (See Resources for a download link to one such option, HandBrake.)

    • 2

      Launch the video conversion application.

    • 3

Navigate to and select the file that you would like to convert to the PSP format.

    • 4

Configure the output file format to produce the desired video type. Many video conversion programs will have a PSP preset. In case your chosen program does not, the correct format is "MPEG-4, H.264."

    • 5

Select a location on your computer for the converted file.

    • 6

Begin the conversion process. The method for doing this will vary depending on the program but will typically be indicated by a "Start," "Encode" or "Convert" button.

Add the File to the PSP's Memory Card

    • 7

Connect the PSP to the computer using the USB cable.

    • 8

Go to the "Settings" menu on your PSP and navigate to "USB connection." Press "X" to put the PSP in USB mode.

    • 9

Open the PSP device folder on your computer.

    • 10

Open the "Video" folder. If this folder does not exist, create a new folder called "Video." Leave this window open, as this is where you will be copying your converted video.

    • 11

Open another window and navigate to the location of the video file that you converted earlier.

    • 12

Copy the converted video file and paste it into the "Video" folder that you left open in Step 4.

    • 13

Disconnect the PSP from the computer.

    • 14

      Turn on your PSP.

    • 15

View your video by going to the "Video" menu on your PSP.
