How to Fix a PSP Disk Read Error

The PlayStation Portable relies on a disc system known as Universal Media Discs, or UMDs for short. Sometimes, when you insert or access a UMD CD, a PSP will show a Disk read error when you are playing a PSP game. This will keep you from playing your game. However, if you know how to handle the PSP when the disk system fails, you can often fix the problem yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your PSP completely. Wait 30 seconds then reboot the PSP. Check to see if the disk read error persists.

    • 2

Remove the disk from the PSP, and clean the disc by wiping it with a moist washcloth. Be sure to dry it completely before placing it back into the PSP.

    • 3

Use a UMD cleaning kit to clean the hardware part of the PSP. Follow the instructions included with the cleaning kit. Check to see if the problem is resolved.

    • 4

Check and see if another UMD disk works with the PSP. If it does, that means your disk is damaged. You may have to purchase another copy.

    • 5

Contact sony's technical support. If you have performed all of the above steps and the PSP still has a disk read error, odds are that your PSP has a hardware issue that can only be resolved by a technician.
