What Is the File Extension Xpd?

Files ending with the suffix .xpd can be one of two different types of files. They may be downloads from the Sony PlayStation Store that facilitate the installation of games and other media files on Sony PSP devices. XPD files are also used in Web development, where the file suffix is an acronym for XML Pipeline Document.
  1. XML Web Development

    • The XML Pipeline takes custom information from a database or library and translates it into HTML language read and displayed by web browsers. XPD is the file suffix assigned to the data after it has been retrieved by the server but before it has been displayed to the user. The code interprets the user's request, formulates the HTML and displays it within the layout template of the site.

    Sony PSP Installation File

    • XPD files are used to facilitate game installation on Sony PSPs. The file authenticates the download and is recognized by Media Go, the Sony PSP installer, as the key to unlock the program and install it on the PSP device.

    PSP Features

    • When a user purchases a game or media file online for his or her PSP, a file with the extension .xpd is downloaded. The XPD file acts as a computerized proof of purchase, verifying the purchase of the games or media and allowing the PSP to accept and install the purchased items.

    Warning

    • While the Sony PSP's XPD file can be opened and modified, it will automatically abort the installation and authentication of the file to which it corresponds.

    Benefits

    • XML-based XPD files help the media's copyright holders prevent piracy or duplication. Each download is accompanied by the XPD file and requires it in order to function. This prevents users from sharing games or media without paying for the title.
