How to Fix A PSP UMD Door

When the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) UMD door becomes jammed or does not open, this is usually due to the "Open" button malfunctioning. Fixing it requires only a small amount of effort, but you have to be willing to take your PSP apart. Since the PSP warranty on the UMD drive does not cover the opening mechanism, this may be your only option for fixing your system without having to purchase a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cover from your PSP by unscrewing the five screws that hold the faceplate to the console. Locate the fifth screw on the bottom edge under the screen.

    • 2

Turn your PSP over and unscrew the screen's metal casing. The disk drive door will pop open when you do this because it releases the entire closing mechanism.

    • 3

Make sure that the spring behind the door has not moved from its groove. If it has, pull it back into place with tweezers. This can often fix problems with the door not opening, even if the "Open" button is functioning properly.

    • 4

Make sure that the plastic slider manipulated by the spring is in its groove. If it has jumped over the metal tag, replace it with tweezers.

    • 5

Replace the metal casing and the PSP cover. Test your disk drive.
