PSP Power Switch Repair Tutorial

PlayStation Portables, or PSPs, are common, blazing the trails for other handheld video game systems. The PlayStation portable boasts the ability to remote play a Paystation 3 using a LAN (local action network). However, these small handhelds take a lot of abuse and simple parts often break.
  1. A Word of Caution

    • Before you get started, realize what you are getting into. You are going to have to know how to solder parts, and have some prior experience doing so. Otherwise, you will most likely end up doing more damage to your PSP, and will probably have to go out and buy a new one.

    Gathering the Tools

    • Once you have devoted yourself to repairing your PS3, you are going to gather a few items before repair. Make sure you have a soldering iron and solder, tools for opening your PSP, a flathead screwdriver and a new switch.

    Repairing the Switch

    • To repair the switch, you are going to have to locate the power switch board, and remove it. This is not a difficult process, and can be easily followed (See Resources). Remove all cables. Now pry open the clip that is holding the plate on the switch. Repeat this on the other side. There will be a spring which needs removal. Once you take it off, the rest of the broken switch will fall off. Go ahead and throw it away. Look at the remains of the old switch. Try and remove as much plastic off the tabs as possible, without taking off metal on the old switch. When all but the metal is off, start to unsolder the metal tabs, so that you can gently slide the metal piece off. Now, solder the new power switch onto the board, fitting onto the tabs the old switch rested on. Try not to lift on the pads too much, as any pads that rest off of the board will cause serious issues. For one, your power switch will not be secured, and will wiggle around. If you messed up, it is OK, you are just going to have to buy a new power board and install it yourself. This is still much cheaper than having to buy a PSP, so you win either way.
