Removing Scratches From a PSP

The Sony PlayStation Portable, or PSP as it is commonly known, is a powerful piece of hand-held gaming hardware. Unless screen protectors have been used, scratches can easily occur on the faceplate and screen of the PSP. While scratches on the faceplate are purely cosmetic, scratches on the screen can drastically affect the use of the device. Once a PSP screen has been scratched, it is possible to partially or almost completely remove the scratches.
  1. Preparing to Fix Your PSP Screen

    • Purchase Displex Display and Scratch remover. Check your local hardware and electronics stores for this product. Displex is also capable of eliminating scratches on other electronic devices, such as iPods.

    Removing PSP Screen Scratches

    • It isn't possible to restore your PSP's screen to perfect condition, but with patience and a little hard work, your screen will shine again. Before starting, ensure that you have a clear workspace with plenty of bright light. The light will help you to see where the scratches actually are, making your job much easier.

Before starting, you will need to mask off the areas around the screen. Do this using masking tape if available, but scotch tape can work in a bind. This is done to prevent the Displex from seeping through the crevices around the buttons and directional controller.

Put one or two drops of Displex on your screen, and begin to polish the screen using the cloths provided with the Displex. If you do not have the provided cloths, be sure to use anti-static, microfiber cloths to prevent further scratching. Start with a gentle, even pressure in a circular motion, and when you have been working for about 5 minutes, wipe the surface clean to inspect the area.

Ensure that you polish the entire screen, and not just an affected area. This will keep the screen looking uniform. Repeat the process if the screen is not sufficiently clear of scratches. Don't be afraid to use more pressure if necessary, but keep the pressure to a minimum. Also, don't wait too long to continue, as Displex can scratch your screen once it has dried on the cloth.

Protecting Your PSP from Future Scratches

    • Once you have removed the scratches from your PSP, it is important to protect it from further damage. A simple screen protector can be easily applied and will prevent all but the worst impacts from damaging your PSP screen. PSP screen protectors can be purchased at any major electronic store.
