PSP Screen Replacement Instructions

The Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) is a mobile game platform made for durability. Created to withstand the rigors of travel the PSP comes with a tough LCD screen that resists damage during the more common bumps and falls you may put it through. But there are times when the screen undergoes just the right sort of mishap which leaved it shattered or cracked beyond use and requiring replacement. For these occasions you can either send it in for replacement, or with a bit of care, replace it yourself.
  1. Replacement Parts

    • There are two ways to go about replacing your PSP screen yourself, depending on the level of damage your screen has taken. If the screen is a complete loss you will have to replace both the screen and the backlight. For those cases when the backlight still operates you need only to replace the LCD screen itself, and can use the present backlight. In addition to the screen and backlight you will need a precision screwdriver set, the sort used for eyeglasses or small electronics repair.

    Changing the Screen

    • There are six screws you'll have to remove in order to open your PSP. Two of these screws are located under the battery of the unit beneath a strip of black tape in the bottom of the battery compartment. In removing this black tape you will be voiding the warranty. Once you've removed the screws you'll be able to open the PSP case.

Once you've opened the case the LCD screen should be exposed. In order to remove the screen from the case you'll need to pry the metal edges of the screen assembly from the screen itself. The LCD should pop right out with the cables still connected to the unit. Fold the screen down exposing the cable connection which should be held to the unit by clips. Carefully lift the clips holding the cables using a small flat-head screwdriver. After lifting the clips you can slide the cables out of the clips and remove the broken LCD from the unit.

Place the new screen face down on your work surface for easy access to the cables. Carefully slip the cables into the clips of your unit and then close the clips onto the installed cables. Fold the screen into place inside the metal assembly. Replace the cover and the screen replacement is complete. Power the unit up to test that the new screen is performing properly.
