PSP Memory Problems

The PSP console is a portable device meant for gaming and media viewing on the go. When using the console, players may run into issues when they need to save content. Sometimes the content will not save due to a lack of memory device, or the device cannot be read. Gamers who use additional features of the PSP may also run into memory limitations during use.
  1. Memory Sticks

    • When playing a PSP game for the first time you may notice that you won't be able to save the game. This is because the console does not feature an internal hard drive or flash memory used for game saves. If you want to save a game on the PSP or download additional content, you will need to purchase a Memory Stick Duo. Any other type of memory card is not compatible with the system. Once purchased, insert the stick into the PSP when the console is powered off. When you restart the console it will format the stick. If you do not format the stick, it will not save games. Remember this before you begin use.

    Recognition Issues

    • If you've been using your Memory Stick Duo to save games and then during a gaming session the PSP won't recognize the card, you may need to reformat the stick. Before you do this, check to see if the stick has been damaged by either inserting it into a PC with a compatible slot or switching the PSP into USB mode and plugging it into a computer. If your computer reads the memory stick, take all the files off the stick and place them in a folder. This will back up your data as reformatting the stick will erase any saved content you have.

    Reformatting

    • Once you have created a backup of your data, insert the stick into your PSP and on the main menu select "Settings" then "System Settings" and finally "Format Memory Stick." After you have completed this, transfer your old data back onto the stick and your stick will be read by the PSP.

    Internal Memory

    • Aside from the memory afforded by a memory stick, the PSP features a limited amount of internal memory that is used to run applications off the console such as Internet radio, the Internet browser, and game sharing. While the memory is adequate to run these programs, continuous use at one time depletes the memory relatively quickly. You may find that while visiting different sites online using the PSP you'll see an error that the PSP has run out of memory.

    Resetting Memory

    • If you find yourself low on RAM, you will need to empty the cache. This can be done through the main menu of the Internet browser. For applications such as the radio and game sharing, if you've run out of memory, power off the console and then power it back on. This will clear any temporary data that has been stored on the console and allow you to restart these programs.
