PSP Version Information

Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) released in 2005 was the first portable gaming system that could also display photos, play music, play video and connect to wireless Internet. Its engine could also support better, higher-quality graphics, which put the system ahead of its main hand-held competitor: the Nintendo DS. Since its inception, it has gone through numerous firmware updates and a few hardware upgrades for better multimedia and gaming functionality.
  1. PSP 1000

    • The PSP 1000 was the first version, and it's the heaviest. It also only has 32 MB of onboard RAM, whereas the more recent versions have 64 MB.

    PSP 2000

    • This version came out in 2007, sporting a lighter weight by a few ounces and more onboard RAM. Its speaker was sacrificed a bit for the drop in weight, but the PSP 2000 also sported an output for a composite cable for TV connectivity.

    PSP 3000

    • The PSP 3000 came out for the Christmas 2008 season as basically a small improvement over the PSP 2000. The screen is a little wider and boasts of more vibrant images. The speakers were also improved and a microphone was added.

    PSP Go

    • This is the newest version of the PSP, which will be released on Oct. 1, 2009. It will be far smaller and lighter, with a slide open screen to reveal the controls. The biggest change the PSP Go has is its lack of a UMD drive, so all games will have to be downloaded to the system's memory stick.

    PSP Availability

    • Most retailers only carry the PSP 3000. Some stores that sell used systems have a few PSP 2000s in stock and even the rarer PSP 1000.
