How to Disassemble a Door on a PSP Slim 2001

Replacing a PSP Slim 2001 UMD Drive door is needed if the drive or laser becomes faulty, causing the gaming system to not be able to read the universal media disc. This process requires a steady hand and keen eye as some of the pins, screws and springs are quite small. In order to open a PSP Slim, you need to remove seven screws.

Things You'll Need

  • Sony PSP
  • Phillips-head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the two screws under the battery and the two on the opposite side of the device with a Philips-head screwdriver. The other three screws are located on the top and bottom of the PSP. Remove them as well.

    • 2

Pry off the PSP faceplate gently so it doesn't break. Using the screwdriver, pry off the button bar located on the bottom edge of the PSP, but do not pull off the connecting ribbon. Next, pry off the LCD screen gently, again not pulling off the connecting ribbons. The ribbons will be taken off next.

    • 3

Disconnect the button bar ribbon, backlight ribbon and LCD ribbon. Use your screwdriver to gently open the ribbon brackets and pull them out of their female connectors.

    • 4

Disconnect the UMD drive ribbons, which are the only two remaining ribbons. Use the screwdriver once again to open the ribbon brackets and pull the ribbons out of the connectors.

    • 5

Push the UMD door tab to the side, releasing the spring. The tab and spring are located along the same edge as the recently removed button bar. Open the UMD door and pry off both sides of the metal frame inside the UMD door with the screwdriver.

    • 6

Push one of the UMD door tabs out to release one side of the door. Twist the door slightly back and forth to release the other side of the door. The door will now be fully released and can be replaced.
