PSP USB Information

The Playstation Portable was released in 2005. Like many other portable electronic devices during that time period, it used a USB cable to connect to a computer, which was one of the only ways of putting content, such as videos and music, onto a memory stick. When the Playstation 3 was released, the PSP could also connect to it with a USB cable and transfer data.
  1. USB MODE

    • USB Mode must be selected for the PSP to connect to a computer when the cords are plugged in. The screen of the PSP shows USB Mode. This verifies that it is connected to a computer. Pulling the cords out while the Playstation Portable is transferring data in USB Mode is dangerous and could corrupt the files being transferred.

    Transfer Data From Computer

    • Since the Playstation Portable can play movies, music and games, transferring them from a computer is as simple as copying everything into the designated folder of the memory stick.

    Connect to a PS3

    • The Playstation Portable can be connected to a Playstation 3. After USB connection, music, videos and some games can be moved to the PSP and vice versa. Remote Play also requires a USB connection between a PSP and PS3 to register the PSP.

    USB 2.0

    • The Playstation Portable uses a USB 2.0 cable. This allows for a much faster transfer rate than USB 1.0. The PSP does not have a regular USB port but a mini USB port and therefore needs a mini USB to USB cable.

    Charging

    • Firmware 3.6 for the PSP 2000 (and up) allows the PSP to charge while it is in USB Mode. This means that regular PSP USB cables that also connected to the charging port were not needed to charge it.
