Copying UMD Games to Memory

One of the primary issues faced by PSP owners is the short battery life. This issue is magnified by the amount of power required to read data off the UMD disc, the medium on which PSP games are released. While Sony is releasing games through their download service, older games are still only available on UMD. PSP owners can transfer these games from the UMD to their console's memory using this guide.
  1. Upgrade Your PSP with Custom Firmware

    • To copy games to a memory stick within your PSP, you first need to install custom firmware onto the system. This firmware has been created by gamers and works around blocks within the console to open up the PSP for additional uses. Having a minimum custom firmware version of 3.52 M33 will allow the copy to take place.

    Copy UMD to Your Computer

    • With custom firmware installed, you can now insert a UMD game into the system and transfer the ISO file from the disc to your computer. This is done by opening the M33 VSH menu on your PSP, which is done by pushing "Select." Change the "USB Device" option to read "UMD Disc." Hook the PSP into your computer using a USB cord--the game will be detected and displayed in a folder on your desktop. Drag the ISO file and place it on your desktop.

Placing Games Onto Your Memory Stick

    • Any game ISOs on your PC can be transferred back to the PSP as long as you have a memory stick inserted into the console. Enter the M33 VSH menu and change the USB device setting to "Memory Stick" instead of "UMD Disc." Hook the PSP back into your computer with a USB cable and drag the ISO onto the displayed window. You'll now be able to access the game from your PSP's memory stick, extending the console's battery life.
