How to Make VBA on PSP Work

Virtual Boy Advance (VBA) for the PlayStation Portable is a Game Boy Advance emulator you can use on your PSP. The file itself is freeware, but you must own the GBA games you want to play. Once you have the file, installing it can be challenge since you will need to install an older version of the PSP's firmware. With minimal effort, you can soon play all your old GBA games on your newer, sleeker handheld.

Instructions

  1. Installing VBA for PSP on your Memory Stick

    • 1

Download the VBA for PSP application (see link in Resources). Save to your PC's hard drive, and make a note of the location.

    • 2

Insert your PSP's memory stick or connect your PSP to your PC through the USB cable. Open your memory stick from Windows Explorer. Note that if you are connecting directly to your PSP, it will be located under Peripheral Hardware.

    • 3

Open the PSP folder, and then open the "Game" folder. Place the VBA files in this folder, and close your memory stick.

    • 4

Remove the memory stick or unplug the USB connector. Restart your PSP, and look for the VBA application on your memory stick under the PSP's menu. If you do not see it there, you will need to install a custom firmware compatibility application because your firmware will not work with VBA.

    Installing Compatible Firmware

    • 5

Download a firmware compatibility application (see link in Resources). It includes 2 files: "ChickHEN R2" and "CFW Enabler v1.0 for ChickHEN."

    • 6

Copy the folder in the "CFWEnabler" file to your memory stick under the directory "PSP/GAME." Then copy the ChickHen R2 file to the root or top directory of the memory stick.

    • 7

Turn on your PSP, and select your memory stick. Then run ChickHen R2. It will ask if you want to install CFW modules, and press the circle button. Then press "X" to start the old version of firmware.

    • 8

Select VBA from the PSP's memory stick under opening menu. Select any GBA games you have saved in your PSP's "Game" folder.
