How to Copy UMD Games to a PSP

PSP owners are met with several challenges when playing a game. The UMD, a small disc that is the chosen format of the console, requires a significant amount of battery life to continuously spin and read data from. Gamers have now found a way to copy games off the disc and place them directly onto their memory sticks, requiring less battery power to run and creating a greater portability for the system. Learn the process of copying UMD games to your PSP.

Things You'll Need

  • PSP running custom firmware 3.52 M33 or higher
  • UMD game
  • Memory stick
  • USB cable

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the custom firmware onto your PSP. This will allow your PSP to be able to rip games from the UMD. (See "Additional Resources," below.)

    • 2

Place the UMD of the game you'd like to copy and a memory stick into the PSP, then power it on. Access your M33 VSH menu by pressing "Select" on the PSP. Locate the option that says "USB Device," and change it to "UMD Disc."

    • 3

Hook your PSP into you computer using the USB cord. Using your PSP, scroll to the far left of the cross-media bar. Scroll down to "USB Connection" and press "X."

    • 4

Notice the window that appears on your computer. It will show the ISO image file of the game you are trying to copy. Don't worry if it does not say the name of the game; most likely a string of numbers will appear as the file name.

    • 5

Drag the ISO file from the window to your computer's desktop. This is the copy of the file that you will be using to access the game without a UMD. Once complete, rename the file to match the name of the game it represents.

    • 6

Press "O" on your PSP to exit USB mode. Press "Select" to once again access the M33 VSH menu, and this time change the USB device setting to "Memory Stick." Exit out of the menu, and reenter the USB connection menu.

    • 7

Drag the ISO file from your desktop back onto the window that appears on your computer. Place the file into the ISO folder, which will save the game data onto your memory stick.

    • 8

Leave the USB connection menu and scroll over to "Games" on the cross-media bar. Select "Memory Stick" and you will be given access to your newly copied game. Press "X" to begin play.
