How to Make a Battery Charger for a PSP

If you have a spare power cable with the same 5-volt adapter plug as your PSP and a USB cable, you can turn these two cables into a battery-charger cable for your PSP. This is not a task to be taken lightly, as you will need to strip and connect wires, including grounding the USB cable's data wires. This homemade adapter runs the risk of damaging your PSP if not wired precisely.

Things You'll Need

  • PSP
  • USB cable
  • Utility knife
  • Power cable with 4.0X1.7 mm adapter plug
  • Crimping tool
  • Soldering gun (optional)
  • Electrical tape
  • Computer

Instructions

    • 1

Take a USB cable cut off the peripheral (square-shaped) connector, then strip away the insulation at that end with a crimping tool. The cable contains four wires: two green and white data cables, the red power wire and the black ground wire. Strip the insulation at the end of each wire.

    • 2

Ground the data (green and white) cables by twisting them together with the ground (black) wire. Make sure this wire combination doesn't touch the power (red) wire.

    • 3

Take a power cable with the same 4.0X1.7 mm (5v) adapter plug the PSP uses. A spare PSP car charger is one example. Cut off the power plug if there is one and strip away the insulation to find two wires inside.

    • 4

Connect the wires to a voltmeter to see which is the power wire and which is the ground. If you get a voltage reading, the power wire is connected to the positive lead, and the ground is connected to the negative. Normally, the power wire is the one with its own insulation.

    • 5

Connect the power wire on the adapter cable to the red wire on the USB cable. Connect the adapter's ground wire to the USB's combined ground/data wire. Twist these wires together or solder them, then wrap electrical tape around the bare connected wires.

Use the completed cable to connect your PSP to a computer through its USB port. The computer will energize the PSP's battery.
