How to Install LED Lights on a PSP

A Playstation Portable, or PSP, is a handheld multimedia device from Sony. With the PSP, users can listen to music, watch movies, play games, and access the Internet. However, one drawback of the PSP is the amount of light emitted by the LCD screen. It is sometimes difficult to see the screen perfectly in every type of light. Users can sidestep this problem by installing LED lights into their PSP. LEDs will add to the light of the screen, and as a side bonus, it just looks cool.

Flip the PSP over and remove the battery pack by first sliding off the plastic covering on the left of the device. Once the battery is removed, unscrew the four screws inside the battery pack's housing located at each of its four corners.

Remove the screw at the right top and bottom of the back of the PSP. After that, locate and remove the last external screw which is located directly in the middle on the bottom of the device. Once all of the screw have been removed, flip the PSP back over and remove its faceplate.

Remove the strip underneath the LCD screen that controls the PSP's buttons by inserting the tip of your screwdriver into the bottom left corner of the screen and pulling up. The strip will come loose, and you can pull it up the rest of the way. Follow the strip back to where it connects to the motherboard. There will be a small white plastic tab that holds the strip down; lift up on the tab and remove the strip and set it aside.

Lift up on the LCD screen to remove it from the PSP. The screen will have two connections behind it, similar to the one you removed in step 3. Follow the connections to the motherboard and lift up on their plastic tabs to release them. Once the screen is safely set aside, unscrew all of the screws that hold the metal protective plate in place to expose the PSP's motherboard.

Solder the positive and negative wires to the LED lights making sure to note which is which. Next, look at the bottom right portion of the motherboard, you will see a series of tiny copper holes. The holes on the far left are the negative holes, and the ones directly above the yellow covering are the positive holes. Solder the negative and positive ends of the wire to their proper locations as shown in the diagram.

Remove the left and right buttons of the PSP, these will pop right out without much effort. Use the hot glue gun and attach LED lights to each of the buttons. After waiting for the glue to dry, reinsert the buttons into their proper locations and reconnect all of the connections of the PSP that you removed by going back through these steps in reverse order.
