How to Make Your Own PSP Battery

The one difficulty with the Sony PSP handheld console is that its battery doesn't have a very long life cycle. The battery is rechargeable, but that won't help you on a long road trip. You can make a homemade battery for your PSP that can last much longer than its own battery. The device requires the equivalent voltage of four AAA batteries, so creating a battery holder that can plug into the PSP's power socket gives you a battery with a longer life.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 AAA batteries
  • Voltmeter (optional)
  • 4 AAA-size battery holder
  • 4.0X1.7 mm adapter plug
  • Adapter plug socket wire
  • Soldering iron (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Test your batteries and the battery holder. Insert all four batteries into the holder and connect the holder's wire leads to a voltmeter. The voltage read needs to be between 4.5 and 5.12 volts for all four batteries combined.

    • 2

Connect an adapter plug that fits the PSP's power socket (4.0X1.7 mm in size) to a compatible socket wire. Usually, the plug will have two pronged leads that connect to holes in the end of the wire. Get the wire and plug from the same vendor to assure they are compatible.

    • 3

Wire a battery holder that holds four AAA batteries to the adapter socket wire. If you get every device from the same vendor like RadioShack, this can be as simple as threading the holder's wire leads into the adapter wire's open insulation. Otherwise, it could involve soldering.

Insert four fresh AAA batteries into the battery holder. Plug the holder's new plug into the PSP's power socket.
