How to Use a Phone Battery as a PSP Battery

The Sony Playstation Portable, or PSP, carries a standard 3.6 volt, 1800 mAh battery for power. This battery can be replaced with units of the same voltage, but with a higher mAh rating. "Milli-amp-hour," or mAh, is the amount of sustained power a battery can produce--the higher the number, the better.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Battery Replacement

    • 1

Locate a replacement battery with the correct voltage and capacity. The ideal candidate for replacement will have a voltage of 3.6 volts and a capacity rating higher than 1800 mAh. There are markings on almost every battery to tell the user how highly the battery is rated. A good battery to use is a standard cordless phone battery, commonly found in land-line home units. To make the process worth the time, a battery with more than 3600 mAh is preferred.

On the cordless phone battery, cut the adapter at the end of the red and black wires. Carefully strip the wires to about 1/8 inch. Solder these leads to the positive and negative terminals inside the PSP, directly inside the battery compartment. The polarity is marked on the original PSP battery.

Close the battery door and turn on the PSP. The unit should function properly. Charge the battery with the standard power cable. To reverse this upgrade, simply de-solder the leads and replace the battery with the original Sony model.
