How to Update PSP Firmware Using a Computer

You can update your Sony Playstation Portable's firmware--the operating system it uses--without using the automatic update option in the settings tab. Updating manually allows you to use older versions of the firmware, which are required for certain third-party applications to run effectively. Before updating, connect your PSP to a computer through the mini-USB port, rather than using a WiFi connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a memory stick into your PSP, or directly into your computer if it has a memory stick slot. On your computer, navigate Windows Explorer to the device. It will either have a separate disk name, or be labeled "PSP."

    • 2

Create a new folder within the stick called PSP. Create a folder inside that one called "Game." Create a third folder within "Game" called "Update." If these folders are already present, delete all of the information in the "Update" folder. Create a backup of this folder on your computer.

    • 3

Download the firmware version you want, and save it to the "Update" folder. Find the latest firmware updates at the Sony PSP site (see Resources). Older versions are available from a number of sites on the Internet.

    • 4

Make sure that your PSP is fully charged. Your PSP will not go through the firmware update procedures unless the battery is full.

    • 5

Remove your PSP from your computer, and restart it. Click on "Game" and then "Memory Stick" from the main menu. Choose the version you want to install in the "Update" folder. Press "Start," and allow the PSP to complete the installation before pushing any other buttons.

Test your PSP to be sure everything installed properly.
