How to Get a PSP to Read Games Better

Although the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a versatile gaming machine, its UMD formatted games can be a little challenging to deal with, especially when they start making weird clicking noises, freezing or running slow. Although these problems are fairly common and don't really indicate a larger problem, there are a few easy solutions to enhance performance.

Instructions

Hold your PSP upright. The best way to hold it is upright, with the LCD screen facing you and the system at a 90 degree angle with the ground. Although it might be a little more convenient to hold your PSP tilted to one side, because the UMD is a disc-based format, holding your PSP in different positions can tilt the disc off-balance, which can result in disc read errors.

Make sure that the PSP is fully charged. When the PSP is not fully charged it goes into power conservation mode, which can limit its ability to read damaged or off-balanced disks.

Make sure your PSP's firmware is up to date. Check for updates by scrolling all the way to the left side of the cross media bar and scrolling down the settings menu until you see "Check for firmware updates." After a few moments a message will appear letting you know whether or not updates have been found. Note, you must be within range of a WiFi hotspot in order to search for and download firmware upgrades.
