How to Put DVDs Onto Your PSP

In addition to being a handheld video game console, the PSP is also a personal media powerhouse and can play back both your music and video files. If you have personal DVDs, or those that come with a digital copy, it is fairly easy to take these movies with you on the go with your PSP.

Burn your DVDs to your hard drive. If you are using home-made DVDs (such as those from a camcorder) then simply select the disc in your "My Computer" section and then click on it twice to view the burned video files. Then right-click those files and copy them to your desktop. If you are using standard DVDs that have digital copy, put the disc in the drive and wait for the prompts. Each DVD is different, so you may need to refer to your DVD's packaging or inside pamphlet for more complete instructions.

Put all the videos into one folder. Doing this will allow you to convert and transfer them all at once rather than doing them one by one, which can be time-consuming.

    • 3

Download a formatting program. Most of your videos will be in different formats, so it is essential that they all be converted to the PSP-friendly MPEG-4 format. There are several free programs available, including FormatFactory (which can also convert videos to play on smart phones like the iPhone and BlackBerry) or the PSP-centric PSP Video 9. See the Resources section for links to these programs.

Convert your files. This part of the process will depend largely on the program you are using. Format Factory and PSP Video both have a "browse" button that you can click to select your folder (the one with all the video files) and then an "OK" button that you click to begin the process. The converted file will then appear in a target folder, which is generally located in your program files.

Transfer the new video files to your PSP. Do this by connecting your PSP via mini-USB to your computer, and then dragging the new files into a dedicated folder in the "MP_ROOT" directory to store your videos. Even though you may already see a PSP video folder in the main directory, this folder will not accept videos transferred from your PC, so you need to create your own video folder in the "MP_ROOT" category to successfully put these DVD videos on your PSP.
