Things You'll Need
Instructions
Update your PSP. Visit the PlayStation.com support page for the PSP (see Resources) and click the link for the latest software-system update. You can update your PSP by downloading the update directly to your PSP through a wireless connection, by downloading it to a computer for later transfer to the PSP, or through UMD disc. Carefully follow Sony's online instructions for installing the update based on the method you use to download it.
Convert your videos and movies to MPEG-4. The only video-file format PSPs can read is MPEG-4 (mp4). You will first need a software program on your computer that can rip and convert several video file formats and DVDs into an mp4 file (see Resources). When converting a video file for use on the PSP using a converter program, be sure that the program encodes your videos at 768 kbps or less. Encoding at higher bit rates will prevent your PSP from playing the video.
Connect your PSP to a computer. Turn on your PSP and insert a USB cable (with mini-B connector) to connect the PSP and computer. If your computer does not recognize your PSP device, access the "Settings" menu of your PSP. This menu is represented by a suitcase icon, which is the first icon from the far left of the screen. Scroll down the "Settings" menu and select "System Settings." Scroll down to "USB Auto Connect" and make sure the option is "On." Go back to the "Settings" menu, scroll up to "USB Connection" and press the "X" button to activate the USB connection manually.
Access the "VIDEO" folder on your PSP. Once your computer recognizes your PSP, select the PSP drive as it appears on your computer. There should be two folders, one named "PSP" and one named "VIDEO." Note that all PSP folders must be typed in all capital letters, otherwise your PSP will not recognize the folder. If there is no "VIDEO" folder, create it here. Do not create the "VIDEO" folder inside the "PSP" folder.
Copy mp4 video files to your PSP. Find the folder on your computer in which you have stored your converted mp4 video files. Select the files you want to put on your PSP and copy them into the "VIDEO" folder of your PSP. This may take several minutes, depending on the speed of your computer and whether you are using a USB 2.0 port. Once this is complete, you can disconnect the USB cable. To play the video on your PSP, simply access the video menu on your PSP and press the "X" button to see a list of the videos stored onto your memory stick. Press "X" to play a video.
