Trouble Charging a PSP 1001

The PSP 1001, Sony's signature portable gaming console can handle between three to six hours of gaming and video playback. Although the replaceable lithium-ion battery pack can fully charge in about two hours and twenty minutes using an AC adapter, when charging becomes a problem, Sony recommends looking at a few of the device's power components to solve the problem.
  1. Battery Pack

    • The Sony PSP 1001 comes with a removal battery. If the battery isn't inserted correctly, it won't charge. Remove the battery cover. It may be a little difficult to slide out, so holding down the push button and sliding it will remove it easily. Check the battery alignment. If the battery contacts aren't touching the contacts in the battery compartment, moving it a little will slide it in place. When you finish, close the battery compartment, and then connect your game to AC power.

    WLAN

    • Although the built-in wireless networking feature on the PSP allows you to connect to the Internet, according to Sony, the battery cannot be charged if the WLAN feature is turned on. If the WLAN access indicator located to the left of your gaming console is on, it means the wireless feature is turned on. To turn off the wireless feature, locate the WLAN button on the side of the PSP and push it down to the ̶0;Off̶1; position. With the wireless networking feature turned off, connecting the Sony PSP to an electrical outlet will charge it.

    AC Adapter

    • Before connecting the AC adapter to an electrical outlet, verify the pin on the cable is properly and tightly connected to the DC IN 5V connector on the bottom of the gaming console. Connect the adapter to the electrical outlet and wait for the orange indicator light to come on. If it doesn't come on, inspect the connector on the AC adapter. If it's dirty, cleaning it with a dry, soft cloth can improve connection. If the problem persists, try a different adapter because there is a great possibility the one you're using is faulty. Keep in mind that a third-party AC adapter manufactured by another company other than Sony might not work properly, or work at all depending on the model.

    Tips and Recommendations

    • Sony doesn't recommend charging the battery in extremely low temperatures. In fact, they say that charging the battery in ambient temperature between 50 and 86 degrees F is ideal.
If you're still unable to charge your PSP's battery, then it's probably damaged. Because PSPs use replaceable batteries, you can purchase a new battery from an authorized dealer. If the gaming console doesn't work even with the new battery, your device is probably faulty, so contacting Sony support for additional troubleshooting and possible repairs is necessary.
