How to Install Sound Activated LEDs for the PSP

The Sony PSP is a portable multimedia device able to play music, games and movies via SDHC flash cards and Sony's UMD media. One mod commonly applied to the PSP is the application of light emitting diodes to flash to the output of the device. Since LEDs require such a small amount of power to illuminate, the small amount of voltage produced by the device is sufficient.

Things You'll Need

  • Soldering iron
  • Lead free solder
  • LEDs
  • TIP 31 transistor
  • 18 gauge primary wire
  • Wire snips
  • 3.5mm headphone wire and jack
  • Wire strippers

Instructions

    • 1

Heat up your soldering iron. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the positive and negative leads of the headphone jack.

    • 2

Apply a small bead of solder to the positive and negative leads of the TIP 31 transistor, and the positive and negative leads of the headphone jack. The positive solders to the left leg; negative on the right.

    • 3

Solder a length of primary wire to the center pin of the transistor. Solder the other end to the negative lead of the LED light. Daisy chain wire jumpers from the negative to positive legs of each LED if you are using multiples.

    • 4

Solder the return wire to the right (ground) pin on the transistor.

    • 5

Insulate the bare wires with electrical tape or other non-conductive material.

    • 6

Plug the headphone jack into the headphone output of the PSP.
