Sony PSP 3000 Vs. Nintendo Dsi

The Sony PSP 3000 and Nintendo DSi personal video game players were introduced within months of each other and were met with mixed reviews. CNET Reviews praised the PSP 3000 for its color reproduction and online functionality, but criticized it for game load times and lack of built-in memory. CNET gave the DSi for its large dual screens and built-in cameras, but saw its low battery life and lack of support for Game Boy Advance games as drawbacks.

    • The Sony PSP 3000, released in October 2008, is 6.7 inches wide, 0.7 inches deep and 2.9 inches long, while the Nintendo DSi, released in April 2009, measures 5.4 inches wide, 0.7 inches deep and 2.9 inches long. At 7.5 oz., the DSi is heavier than the PSP 3000, which weighs 6.7 oz. The PSP 3000 features a 4.3-inch thin-film transistor active matrix screen that displays more than 16 million colors. The DSi, on the other hand, comes with two 3.3-inch TFT active matrix screens that display 262,000 colors. The PSP 3000 is a candy-bar-style device, meaning it has not slide out or flip features. The DSi, on the other hand, is a flip machine that features a screen on its upper and lower portions.

    Internal Components

    • Equipped with 64MB of internal memory, the PSP 3000 supports Sony Memory Stick Duo cards for expanded memory and operates using a 333 MHz processor. The DSi features 256MB of built-in memory and supports SD and SDHC cards for expanded memory and operates using a 134 MHz processor. Each device connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi 802.11b technology, but the DSi also features the 802.11g standard. The Wi-Fi 802.11b standard produces data transfer rates of up to 11 megabits per second, while the 802.11g standard transfers data at up to 54 Mbps.

    Media Players And Connectivity

    • While the PSP 3000 features a built-in media player that supports audio and video files, the DSi only an onboard audio player that supports AAC files. The PSP 3000's media player supports an assortment of audio and video file formats, including MP3, MPEG4, H.264 and WMA. The PSP 3000 also connects to a TV for composite video viewing. For transferring files and synchronizing data, the DSi connects to a personal computer through a USB cable.

    Miscellaneous

    • The Nintendo DSi features a pair of built-in 0.3-megapixel cameras that give you the ability to take pictures using the machine and then transform them into unique shapes and styles using the device's image editing application. The PSP 3000 and DSi feature built-in stereo speakers and microphones. While the DSi comes packaged with the "Aly and AJ Adventure" game, the PSP 3000 does not come with any games. Both units are powered by a lithium-ion battery.
